WHITE WATER FUN!

Cadets from the Squadron have found a great way to cool down in the summer sun by taking part in kayaking and canoeing experience.

The cadets have been attending training days organised by Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Wing which allowed cadets to work towards their British Canoe Union one star awards by instructing them all the basics of kayaking and canoeing in a fun and safe environment.  They learnt how to paddle and what to do if they capsized.  The cadets then got the opportunity to test their skills on the Cardington white water course where they could apply their skills in fast moving water.

The Cardington white water course is normally a dry channel running from the River Ouse into the Priory Marina, with some man made barricades and the opening of a sluice gate it turns into an action packed canoeing course!

2484 ‘OOZE’ SUCCESS

Fourteen cadets and four members of staff from the Squadron have recently returned from Summer Camp at RAF Linton-on-Ouse, North Yorkshire.  An Air Cadet Summer camp is an opportunity for cadets to live on an operational Royal Air Force station for a week, living alongside service personnel so they can get a close up view on RAF life.

RAF Linton-on-Ouse is one of the busiest airfields in the country. Tasked with the training of future fast jet pilots and Weapons Systems Officers for the RAF and Royal Navy, the Station operates the Tucano T1 training aircraft.

Cadets had the opportunity to visit various sections on the station such as engineering, air traffic control, survival equipment, the fire section and of course the flying Squadrons.  When visiting sections cadets were looked after by members of the RAF who explained their role and how they were trained.

Cadets were able to experience flying in the Tutor aircraft with No.9 Air Experience Flight and the Vigilant glider thanks to 642 Volunteer Gliding School.  Also a number of cadets got to fly the Tucano aircraft in the state of the art simulators on the station.

During the week an interflight competition was held, as part of this was a shooting competition which saw Corporal Matthew Sibley awarded best shot and Flight Sergeant Rupert Sage achieve his regional marksman.

Room inspections were carried out each morning with the cadets ensuring their beds were made and their living area kept to the highest of standards.  At the end of the week Corporal Ryan Slater was judged as having the best room for the week.

The cadets also had the opportunity to learn about aviation and military history with visits to the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington and the former prisoner of war camp near York called Eden Camp.  Other activities on offer were swimming, quasar and a visit to Adrenalin.  Adrenalin is home to the official Krypton Factor assault course where cadets and staff had to slog through water, mud, over energy sapping obstacles, crawling, running, climbing, swinging, balancing and jumping to complete the course as a team.  Whilst at Adrenalin cadets were able to take part in a confidence building high ropes course.
